Beware when upgrading RightClick

your settings shall go away

Tuesday, September 4, 2007 by Phoon | Discussion: RightClick

Perhaps I have missed something in previous posts concerning this.
Having spent a considerable amount of time customizing my RightClick menu, you can imagine my total joy at finding all those settings lost after upgrading to the lastest version dated 8-29-07. I unloaded rightclick before I did the upgrade. In the past, on other SD products I have found it always best to unload the app prior to upgrading.

That is a huge bummer and one I have experienced. I learned to keep RC open while I upgraded it on previous occasions and have not lost all my hard work setting up the program as I did on the previous upgrades when I unloaded RC.

This has always been one of the bad points of RC - not being able to save configurations. And one that most of us have always reminded them about.

You should be able to have different RC configs like you do in Object dock and " Save Theme As "

You have my condolences Phoon...as one that has sat and groaned when I found an empty menu twice before.

Yeah, I saw in the forums that someone else had the problem so I passed on the update because mine has been working fine.

Sorry you lost your menus.

It happens. Frankly, I'm getting used to stuff like that happening.
Countless times I've had DesktopX crash while I was working on a theme. The end result was total loss. I learned to keep a "safe" save of my work. Too bad we don't have that kind of feature in RC.

I never unload any SD-apps before upgrading. Same with ObjectDock. If You unload it, the settings will be gone after upgrading (Oh joy !).

I won't count how many times people demanded a 'Save configuration' function. Ignored since years now.

I would just hate to have something miss a portion of upgrade because a file may be in use. ..

I normally do not have the application open that im doing upgrade on - But I learned from past experience that RC needs to be left running

Once bitten twice shy. Unbelievable that this problem hasnt been addressed in the update.

This update is probably only worthwhile if you have Vista, if anything it is worse now on XP. In the config window I can no longer access the menu tab, so I now have to use a roundabout way to configure each submenu I have.

This is why they want You to reboot after the update.

I never could get the new RightClick beta to use the current WB skin. Uninstalled (through SDC), unchecked 'Show PreRelease Versions' and installed the last stable release. Working like it should now!

I should note that I didn't have RightClick installed at all before installing the latest beta, so I didn't 'upgrade' to the beta. It was a fresh install. Don't know if it is WB 6 related or not.

.... and still no "save"-button

Since then I have become so used to automatically backing up 'desktopmenu.obbar' and 'RightClick.ini' that I probably still would do it, even if we would have that long- and desperately awaited button.

There is a new RC update. But im kind afraid of pushing the button. Tired it twice. Once RC on and once RC off. Lost my configs twice.

I also have a backup copy of my RC. But i dont think it will be helpful after the update.

Anyone tried the new update without loosing configs? And if so, how u did it

Updated just now with RC running, I had to reboot, but my menu was still there afterwards.

They only updated RightClick due to Windows Vista...I know its already mentioned, but it keeps me from yelling while sitting here at my desk. I'd love to see some of the aforementioned "customer" (I assumes too that we're all PAYING customers) requests added to RightClick and not just those that are required to keep the masses from screaming that it doesn't work with Vista...
